Pattie has always loved crunching numbers; accounting was one her favourite subjects when she was at school. In 1998-after many years working in bookkeeping roles in the entertainment industry-Pattie saw the opportunity for a need of more accounting services as the Government was ready to implement the then new, GST system. She realised the potential of the need for this skill and timed this opportunity by embarking on her own business venture-Keamac Pty Ltd.
"What I love about accounting is that it is either right or wrong, it is never grey", says Pattie. With this black and white attitude and her wealth of experience, Patties business is flourishing.
Her journey started as a "one woman show", with one particular client that she worked for over a number of years. By working hard and maintaining a strong reputation, Pattie found that she has not had to follow the traditional 'norms' of business advertising-her entire business is based on referrals, which have been flowing in over many years. As her business has grown, she now employs a small team that support her in the Mount Tambourine office.
Starting, maintaining and growing a successful business is what Pattie credits as her greatest achievement. "I am very self-sufficient and at 50, I am happy where I am", says Pattie.
"People go into business for a range of reasons, for me, I wanted independence and to call my own shots", says Pattie.
Pattie describes her business as organic- it is not big-business. She prefers to focus on the people; not losing sight of her client's needs. "When you are close to people, as I am, in the very nature of what I do for them, there is a certain level of confidence and trust", says Pattie.
For those who are wishing to start their own business, Pattie's advice is to be consistent, be driven and don't stop peddling. If you have a dream, go out there and get it…Don't take your eye off for a minute. Although there are many sacrifices you have to make, the rewards and are well-worth it in the end.
Pattie's tip for women is to be true to yourself, don't be afraid to make tough decisions and trust your instincts.
